Abstract | Currently, a wide array of government and non-profit programs provide resources and support to cisgender women as they recover from breast cancer with an implicit focus on restoring the appearance of conventional femininity after treatment. Cisgender women who “live flat” (that is, choose not to have breast reconstruction) often experience deep aesthetic concerns after mastectomy yet typically have no place in these programs. This chapter explores their discussions of vanity, aesthetics, and appearance in relation to their perceptions of themselves, their interactions with others, and the meaning of breasts and attention to appearance in contemporary social life. |
